Texas Formation Water Database

Published by the Texas Water Development Board - Report 157

The calculation of water saturation from electric logs usually requires an estimate for the resistivity of the formation water, or Rw.  There are a number of sources for saltwater chlorides data used in these electric log calculations - logging companies, producers, professional societies and other groups. One of the most complete sources of Rw data for the State of Texas is Report 157 published by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) in 1972.

This report assembled detailed chemical analyses of saline water from more than 15 sources, including private companies, previous publications and laboratory evaluations made by the TWDB in the course of their work.  A Survey of the Subsurface Saline Water of Texas, Volume 2, contains more than 3,500 water analyses. The tables include formation name, county, depth, pH, specific gravity and parts-per-million (ppm) contents for sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, sulfate, bicarbonate, iron and H2S.  Although most of the samples have data on total solids, many of the listings do not contain details on the other ions and minerals.
